There is an early 90's movie called the Dead Poet's Society in which Robin Williams plays an eccentric but wonderful teacher at a New England prep school. He reaches the students on a new level with his raw enthusiasm and passion. I had a teacher like that in undergrad and unfortunately just found out that he passed away.
I am a fairly stoic person, particularly when it comes to sadness, but I cried immediately when I found out about Dr. Essar. He meant a lot to me. More so than any of the other faculty in the biology department, he reached students by being genuinely enthusiastic about his area. His door was always open when I needed to talk and more than any other teacher in my life, he pushed me along and believed in me that I could get to dental school. When I told him that I got in at SIUE, he smiled and said he always knew I would.
I talked to him just a few months ago and caught up. I'm glad I got to say a final good-bye, even if I didn't know it.
